Nowadays, it has been so convenient for us to surf the Internet via 3G, no matter you are in Macau or travelling abroad, you can still obtain the latest information, sending and receiving e-mails, using instant messaging, visiting websites for social networking and music/video streaming.  But beware when browsing the web abroad, related roaming data charges will be incurred as based on the individual charges of roaming network operators. Take a look at the below tips to be a smart data user.

 

Local Tips

1.     To facilitate the user to enjoy data usage, mobile data service will be turned on while the 3G service plan is activated and minimum charge is $0.000244 per KB.  Customers may request to suspend the Mobile Broadband service if no mobile data service is required.

 

2.     Customers are recommended to apply a mobile data monthly package if the monthly used data usages are more or less the same. The following tables summarize the data usage of the common activities, can be taken as an indication:

3.     Customers need to take note that the first month of free local data usage will be proportionately calculated from the service effective date until the bill cut-off date.  For instance, Mr. Chan applied 2GB data service plan on the 16th, the monthly bill date is the 26th, in this way, the total free data usage that Mr. Chan can use from the 16th till the 26th is around 682MB (2048MB/30 days x 10 days)

 

4.     If the total data usage exceeds the monthly free data usage, the extra charge is $0.000244 per KB.  To ensure reasonable pricing for customers, CTM has set a $500 Local Data Usage Ceiling Charge.  In other words, no extra charge will be incurred even though the data usage exceeds the monthly ceiling charge.

 

5.     Besides applying Data Package, customer may also install some Apps to check or control data consumption. Recommended apps are My Data Manager (Android) or Data Usage Monitor (iOS). Customers are reminded that the data usage is for reference only, please refer to the monthly bill for actual usage charge.

 

6.     Customers are also welcome to download CTM Buddy to check the mobile usages (including regular monitoring of the remaining free data usage, so as to avoid extra data charge), enquire Wi-Fi hotspots & CTM Bonus Points etc.

 

7.     Most of the smartphones are equipped with one or more automatic information update features (e.g. receiving weather reports, news, stock market status and social networking sites, etc), this may incur high data charges. Customers are required to keep track of their data usage, recommend to set manual update and synchronization process on the mobile phone to control data consumption.

 

8.     Some mobile Internet activities, such as Apps updates, music / video streaming, all will consume large amount of data usage, suggest customer to connect to CTM Wi-Fi hotspots or home Wi-Fi, switch the handset device from mobile data mode to Wi-Fi mode to process the above activities.

 

9.     When customers are situated near the border, the mobile network is connected to a foreign network unintentionally so the roaming service is activated at the same time.  To avoid any charges for roaming traffic, we recommend the "Network Selection" in the mobile device menu to be set in "Manual Network Selection" mode and press #141*1# to activate Roaming Data Access Barring Service. 

 

10. If you want to suspend the access of data service temporarily, simply follow the easy steps below to activate / deactivate the “Mobile Data Access Barring Service”.  Moreover, there is no charge for activating and deactivating this barring service to suit your every need. You can now have total control of your access anytime at your convenience with these simple steps!

11. The receiving of SMS alert / SMS notification / SMS confirmation may delay due to network condition. The content of the SMS is for reference only, in case there is any discrepancy, the latest records of CTM shall prevail.

 

Roaming Tips

1.     As roaming charges are much higher than domestic rates, it can also varies from country to country, consumers may incur unexpected high data roaming bills as a result of unintended use of data roaming service.  Before traveling aboard, if you don't foresee that you require mobile data roaming services, you may activate the Roaming Data Access Barring Service via network setting on the handset device, or just dial #141*1# on handset and press “Send”.    

 

2.     For customers who are using Mobile E-mail Messaging, when abroad, e-mails will still be downloaded automatically to the mobile phone through data network.  Even if user does not check e-mails, data roaming charge is still incurred. Moreover, the automatic information update features may also incur data roaming charges, examples are receiving weather report and news, automatic Apps updates and visiting websites for social networking.  Therefore, if customer does not need this when traveling abroad, just turn off the automatic update features on the handset device.  

 

3.     $500 Local Mobile Broadband Data Usage ceiling charge doesn’t apply on overseas usage.

 

4.     Frequent travelers can enjoy the mobile broadband service while roaming, simply apply for the Bridge DataRoamUnlimited1 Day ($98 per day) to enjoy a full day of unlimited roaming data usage in the selective roaming destination.  However, customers need to take note that if this roaming day pass is applicable to the specific destinations / countries and if the International Roaming Service is applied in advance.  Customers are required to select specific roaming network operator to enjoy such roaming data day pass (highly recommend to select the network manually at handset device) to avoid an additional roaming data charges.

5. “Bridge Data Roam Unlimited 1 Day” Gentle Reminder:

-          Customers are required to apply the International Roaming Service in advance before applying the “Bridge Data Roam Unlimited 1 Day”.

-           Dial #130# at any selected country / destination on the day to apply “Bridge Data Roam Unlimited 1 Day”, you will receive a confirmation SMS upon successful application, and can start using the roaming data service. The service will start from the service effective time to 23 : 59 : 59 of your selected destination local time.

-          Before apply the “Bridge Data Roam Unlimited 1 Day”, customers are required to self-unbar your  “Mobile Data Access Barring Service".  Please dial #141*3# for checking your data service status.

-          The “Bridge Data Roam Unlimited 1 Day” will not extend the service automatically. If customers wish to continue using this service, they need to dial #130# to reapply on the next day, and a confirmation SMS will be received upon successful application.

-          When dial #130# to apply and using “Bridge Data Roam Unlimited 1 Day”, customers are required to select the specific roaming network operator to enjoy this service (highly recommend customer to select the network “manually” at handset device).

 

6.     If you want to suspend the roaming data service temporarily,    simply follow the easy steps below to activate / deactivate the “Roaming Data Access Barring Service”.  It is free of charge!
